In short: Inspired by the 1844 Alexandre Dumas novel The Count of Monte Cristo, the drama series Revenge debuted on ABC in 2011. It followed a woman infiltrating an affluent beachside community to settle scores with those who wronged her family, quickly becoming a ratings juggernaut and a cultural phenomenon.

Created by Mike Kelley, the series centered on a protagonist returning to the Hamptons to dismantle the lives of the families responsible for her past trauma. The show’s premise was an immediate success, with its pilot episode drawing over 10 million viewers. It consistently outperformed competing crime dramas in the critical 18–49 advertising demographic, marking a significant victory for ABC that had not been seen in its time slot since the conclusion of Lost.

The production was characterized by its high-profile casting, featuring Madeleine Stowe and Emily VanCamp, and its distinct aesthetic, which earned it features in major publications like Vogue and Vanity Fair. Behind the scenes, the show underwent significant creative shifts, including the departure of Kelley as showrunner after the second season, with Sunil Nayar taking over the leadership role. The series also expanded its footprint beyond television, notably through a 2014 graphic novel published by Marvel Comics that explored the lead character's origins.

Despite its strong start, the show faced challenges in later seasons. Ratings fluctuated due to shifts in scheduling against major televised events like the Grammy Awards and the NFC Championship Game, as well as audience pushback regarding specific narrative directions. By the time the series concluded in May 2015, it had completed four seasons. While ABC explored the possibility of a spin-off and later a sequel, both projects were ultimately passed over by the network, leaving the original four-season run as the definitive story.
