A storm that rewinds time to the 20th century
In short: In the world of Reverse: 1999, a phenomenon known as the Storm is undoing history. This turn-based tactical RPG follows Vertin, the only individual naturally immune to these temporal shifts, as she navigates a conflict between human organizations and Arcanist-supremacists across the 20th century.
Developed by Bluepoch, Reverse: 1999 is set in an alternate history where humans live alongside Arcanists—individuals possessing magical abilities. The central narrative revolves around the "Storm," a mysterious phenomenon that began rewinding time on the last day of 1999, pulling eras from across the 20th century into a temporal loop. This phenomenon began on the final day of 1999. It pulls various eras from the twentieth century into a recurring cycle.
The story focuses on the tension between two primary factions. The St. Pavlov Foundation, composed mostly of humans and Arcanists, works to serve humanity and stop the Storm. Opposing them is Manus Vindictae, an Arcanist-supremacist group acting as the primary antagonist. At the center of this struggle is the protagonist, Vertin, an Arcanist known as the Timekeeper who is uniquely immune to the Storm's effects. The protagonist is a member of the St. Pavlov Foundation. She is tasked with investigating the phenomenon to find a way to halt it.
Combat is driven by card-shuffling mechanics. Players manage a hand of 7–8 Incantation cards, merging identical cards to increase damage or gain "Moxie" to trigger Ultimate skills. While the game has been praised for its artstyle, character design, and voice acting, some critics, such as Pocket Tactics, have found the narrative presentation to be baffling and complicated. Players can also equip Psychubes or upgrade Resonance to enhance their characters. Additionally, players can customise a personal Wilderness area using hexagonal pieces.
