From church janitor to Broadway stardom: the grit behind Roberta Colindrez
In short: Before becoming a Tony Award-winning face on Broadway, Roberta Colindrez worked as a church janitor and in restaurants while navigating the grueling path of a New York theater artist. Her journey from Monterrey to the spotlight illustrates the profound persistence required to turn a childhood dream into a professional reality.
Roberta Colindrez's path to the stage began with a move from Mexico to the United States at age 5. After living in Houston for six years, she relocated to Austin, Texas, at age 10. It wasn't until she was 12 that she first identified her desire to become an actor, a spark ignited during a theater class she took with her brother. She eventually pursued this goal formally, earning a bachelor's degree in acting from Texas State University before moving to New York City.
The transition to the New York theater scene was marked by significant labor. While seeking acting work, Colindrez held various jobs, including working in restaurants and as a church janitor. She eventually found her footing with the New York Neo-Futurists, making her off-off-Broadway debut in 2006 in the revue Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. This period of regional theater and short films served as the foundation for her eventual move to the national stage.
In 2013, Colindrez gained significant acclaim by portraying Joan within the off-Broadway musical Fun Home. After transitioning to Broadway in 2015, the play earned critical praise, securing five Tony Awards alongside seven additional nominations. Beyond the musical stage, she has expanded her reach into television—with a 'breakout' role on I Love Dick—and film, while also contributing as a writer for the stage and a voice actor for the podcast Alice Isn't Dead.
