How a life-altering fall inspired a Tony Award-winning musical career
In short: While studying at Washington University in St. Louis, Steven Sater survived a terrifying apartment fire by jumping from a balcony. The resulting injuries—broken vertebrae and serious burns—forced him into a long recovery, a period that ultimately inspired him to teach himself Ancient Greek and pursue a life in the arts.
Sater's creative journey is defined by his long-standing collaboration with composer Duncan Sheik. Their partnership began in 1999 and has produced several significant works, most notably the 2006 Broadway musical Spring Awakening. This production, an interpretation of Frank Wedekind's play, became a massive global phenomenon, reaching over 49 countries including Australia, Japan, and Brazil. For his work on the musical, Sater won two Tony Awards in 2007 for Best Book and Best Musical Score. This musical adaptation of the German play has been staged in numerous international locations. It has even been featured in a notable production in Los Angeles where the cast performed using both English and American Sign Language.
The success of Spring Awakening led to further diverse projects. Sater has explored historical and literary themes through works like Alice by Heart, which reimagines Lewis Carroll's Wonderland during the London Blitz of World War II. He also teamed up with various creators, including Serj Tankian of System of a Down, to create a musical adaptation of Aeschylus's Prometheus Bound, an effort dedicated to prisoners of conscience via Amnesty International. His work with Serj Tankian resulted in the single 'The Hunger', which was recorded by Shirley Manson. Additionally, he has collaborated with Burt Bacharach on a musical titled Some Lovers, which is based on an O. Henry short story.
Beyond the stage, Sater has expanded into literature and television. In February 2020, he released Alice by Heart as a novel through Razorbill, which became a best-selling theater book on Amazon. His influence also extends to the screen, having co-written songs for various films and developing television pilots for networks like NBC, FX, HBO, and Showtime. His literary work includes a companion book titled A Purple Summer, which offers insights into his lyrical writing. Furthermore, he has worked on various television projects, including a series titled Rise that focuses on a high school teacher.
