From musical comedy groups to surrealist sitcoms: the evolution of Seán Cullen
In short: Seán Cullen mastered the art of the multi-hyphenate long before it was a modern career path. By blending mimicry, improvisation, and music, he transitioned from a touring comedy group member into a versatile voice actor, novelist, and host of surrealist television.
Cullen first entered the public eye in 1987 as part of Corky and the Juice Pigs. This musical comedy group achieved significant international reach, winning awards at the Edinburgh Fringe and performing eight times at Just for Laughs in Montreal. Their work even landed them a feature on Fox's MADtv before the group disbanded in 1998 after a decade-long run. This period established Cullen’s foundation in high-energy performance and ensemble comedy.
Following his time with Corky, Cullen pivoted to solo projects and diverse media. He gained recognition for his one-man show 'Wood, Cheese and Children,' which became a CTV Comedy Now! special and earned a Gemini Award nomination. His versatility expanded into voice acting for shows like 'Seven Little Monsters' and 'Almost Naked Animals,' as well as traditional television roles on CBC and American sitcoms like 'The Ellen Show.' He even ventured into musical theater, appearing in the Canadian production of 'The Producers' in 2004.
Cullen’s later career is defined by a unique brand of surrealism. His CBC sitcom, 'The Seán Cullen Show,' featured an eccentric cast including characters like Sonny—the mentally challenged son of Sasquatch—and Frau Foch, an evil genius neighbor. He also developed 'The Seán Schau!', a live late-night talk show format featuring a glowing white orb named "The Orb" as a sidekick and improvised songs with altered lyrics. Beyond the stage, he is a prolific author, winning an Arthur Ellis Award in 2007 for his first young adult novel.
His influence extends to radio and long-term musical collaborations. He hosted 'Simply Seán,' a music program on CBC Radio One in the mid-2000s, and maintained a longstanding relationship with the band Barenaked Ladies since 1989. This career trajectory illustrates a move from group mimicry toward building distinct, often bizarre, intellectual properties that span literature, radio, and television.
