How a young inventor in Sparkton Hills turns scrap metal into high-tech solutions
In short: In the futuristic town of Sparkton Hills, a young engineer named Rusty Rivets transforms discarded machine parts into sophisticated gadgets. Inspired by the principles of maker culture, this animated series follows Rusty and his team of customized robots as they solve problems through creative engineering and scientific ingenuity.
The series, which ran for three seasons between November 2016 and May 2020, centers on the inventive spirit of its protagonist. Rusty operates out of a mobile laboratory situated in a local recycling yard, where he repurposes scrap to build his robotic companions. His primary sidekick is the Botasaur, a robotic tyrannosaurid, supported by a group of smaller, specialized machines known as the Bits. These characters reflect the show's core focus on basic science and technology.
Rusty's creative process is defined by his signature mantra: modify, customize, and Rustify. While he leads the team, he is often joined by his best friend, Ruby Ramirez, who manages the group's operations using a tablet computer. Ruby’s aesthetic, featuring a red sash with white dots, serves as a nod to the iconic Rosie the Riveter. Together, they face challenges from their neighbor and rival, Frankie Fritz, who frequently attempts to outdo Rusty's engineering feats, sometimes through dishonest means.
The production history of the show highlights the collaborative nature of the Canadian animation industry. Developed by Spin Master Entertainment, the project began its journey in late 2014. Before the first season concluded, the original animation studio, Arc Productions, underwent a corporate transition, becoming part of Jam Filled Toronto in August 2016. Despite these structural changes, the show maintained its commitment to exploring engineering concepts, with Rusty’s lineage—hinted at as being the eighth in a line of Rivet inventors—providing a sense of historical depth to his futuristic world.
