In short: Created by Jan Van Rijsselberge, Robotboy follows a young fan named Tommy Turnbull who is entrusted with a powerful robot by its inventor, Professor Moshimo. While Tommy helps the robot learn to act human, they must constantly evade an evil genius determined to use the machine for world domination.

The origin of Robotboy is rooted in a personal experience of its creator, Jan Van Rijsselberge. After his son confided that he was being bullied at school and expressed a desire for a robot to protect him, Van Rijsselberge used this sentiment as the foundational concept for the show's protagonist. The series, which was produced by Alphanim at their studio in Vincennes, eventually spanned 52 episodes and 104 segments, airing internationally across Europe, Latin America, and the United States between 2005 and 2008.

The narrative centers on Professor Moshimo, a world-renowned scientist who creates Robotboy as a defensive force. Fearing that his creation might be captured by his arch-enemy, Dr. Kamikazi, and his henchman Constantine, Moshimo sends the robot to live with Tommy Turnbull in San Francisco. Tommy, a 10-year-old who acts as a mentor to the robot, is joined by his friends Gus and Lola. Together, they navigate the challenges of childhood while defending Robotboy from various antagonists, including bullies, secret agents, and rival inventors like the egotistical Björn Björnson.

Despite its global reach, the series received mixed critical reception. Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media awarded the show two out of five stars, criticizing its repetitive plotlines and the questionable logic of its villains. Nevertheless, the show remains a notable entry in the genre of robot-centric animation, sharing thematic similarities with other works like My Life as a Teenage Robot. While physical media releases were limited, the complete series has been made available to audiences through digital platforms like YouTube.
