In short: Beyond her Oscar-nominated breakthrough in 1970, Kellerman navigated a six-decade career defined by versatility. From jazz singing and cabaret to voiceover work and stage performances, she defied the narrow casting of her early television years, eventually chronicling her complex Hollywood journey in a candid 2013 autobiography.

Born in 1937, Sally Kellerman grew up in the San Fernando Valley before finding her way to the Actors Studio West. Her early career was marked by a struggle to escape typecasting; she famously noted that for years, television producers only offered her roles as alcoholics or victims. Her fortunes shifted dramatically in 1970 when she played Major Margaret O’Houlihan in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and established a long-standing creative partnership with Altman, leading to roles in films like Brewster McCloud, The Player, and Prêt-à-Porter.

Kellerman’s artistic range extended far beyond the screen. She was a dedicated vocalist who signed a recording contract at age 18, though her debut album, Roll with the Feelin', did not arrive until 1972. She performed in cabaret venues like Reno Sweeney and the Rainbow Grill, and later released a jazz-focused album titled Sally in 2009. Her voice was equally recognizable in animation and commercial work, including roles in Sesame Street Presents: Follow That Bird and various television series.

Her personal life was as unconventional as her career. Raised in the Christian Science faith, she navigated significant challenges, including a 1961 medical emergency following a botched home abortion. She was also a fierce advocate for her family, adopting her niece after her sister’s difficult separation. In her 2013 book, Read My Lips: Stories of a Hollywood Life, she reflected on these personal trials alongside her professional experiences, offering a raw look at the industry from the perspective of a woman who refused to be defined by a single role.

Throughout her later years, Kellerman remained active, appearing in projects ranging from the soap opera The Young and the Restless to the comedy series Maron. She received honors such as the Susan B. Anthony 'Failure is Impossible' Award and a lifetime achievement recognition from the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, cementing her legacy as a resilient and multifaceted performer.
