How an Italian child actor became a global icon of the spaghetti Western
In short: Born Mario Girotti, Terence Hill rose from a child star in post-war Italy to become one of the country's highest-paid actors. By adopting a stage name to break into international markets, he forged a legendary partnership with Bud Spencer, defining a genre before reinventing himself as a beloved television priest.
Born in Venice in 1939 to a German mother and an Italian chemist, Mario Girotti’s early life was marked by the trauma of the Dresden bombing during World War II. Discovered by filmmaker Dino Risi at a swimming meet at age 12, he spent his youth appearing in a string of Italian films, including Luchino Visconti’s 1963 epic The Leopard. During this period, he also balanced his burgeoning acting career with three years of classical literature studies at an Italian university.
His career shifted dramatically in 1967 when he starred in the spaghetti Western God Forgives... I Don't! alongside Carlo Pedersoli, later known as Bud Spencer. To appeal to international audiences, the production team encouraged cast members to adopt American-sounding names. Girotti selected 'Terence Hill' from a list of 20 options, debunking the persistent myth that he chose the name to honor his wife. The film’s massive success launched a prolific partnership, with the duo starring in hits like the 1970 comedy They Call Me Trinity, which became the highest-grossing Italian film of its time.
Hill’s career spanned decades and continents, from moving to Stockbridge, Massachusetts, in the 1970s to starring in English-language films like Mr. Billion and March or Die. Despite his fluency in both Italian and English, he was frequently dubbed by other actors until he began providing his own English voice in 1977. In the new millennium, he found sustained success on Italian television, starring as the titular priest in the long-running series Don Matteo from 2000 until 2022. Today, Hill holds both American and German citizenship, the latter granted by descent in 2022.
