How a self-professed nerd conquered the biggest sci-fi franchises in Hollywood
In short: From cult British sitcoms to the high-octane world of Mission: Impossible, Simon Pegg has built a career defined by geek culture. Known for his nerdy character roles, he has achieved the rare feat of appearing in Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who, bridging the gap between indie comedy and blockbuster spectacle.
Born Simon John Beckingham in Gloucester, England, on February 14, 1970, the actor adopted his stepfather's surname, Pegg, following his parents' divorce when he was seven. After studying English literature and theater at the University of Bristol, graduating with a BA in 1991, he entered the industry through sketch comedy and stand-up. His early television work included the short-lived Six Pairs of Pants in 1995 and the cult classic sitcom Spaced (1999–2001), which he co-developed with Jessica Hynes.
Pegg is most famous for his long-standing creative partnership with director Edgar Wright. Together, they formed the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, consisting of the "romantic zombie comedy" Shaun of the Dead (2004), the buddy-cop slasher Hot Fuzz (2007), and the science-fiction comedy The World’s End (2013). These films often featured his real-life best friend, actor Nick Frost, who frequently plays his sidekick or best friend.
In Hollywood, Pegg has become a staple of major franchises. He portrays tech whiz Benji Dunn in the Mission: Impossible series, appearing in films from Mission: Impossible III (2006) through Dead Reckoning Part One (2023). He also achieved what some call the "Holy Grail of Nerd-dom" by playing Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the Star Trek reboot films (2009–2016) and appearing in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).
Beyond live-action, Pegg has lent his voice to the animated character Buck in several Ice Age films, starting with Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 2009. His versatility spans from writing and starring in the sci-fi comedy Paul (2011) to appearing in satirical series like The Boys (2019–2023). This range has established him as a prominent figure in both British comedy and global blockbuster cinema.
