From the theater stage to a multi-million dollar digital empire
In short: Before he became a staple of modern voice acting, Sam Riegel was a child actor on the Broadway stage. His journey from live theater to the helm of a massive independent production company illustrates a unique evolution in how modern entertainment is built and funded.
Born in Washington, D.C. in 1976, Riegel began his performing career in local theater at just six years old. By age 11, he was already appearing in touring productions of Les Misérables, and by 14, he was performing in The Sound of Music. Despite early television roles on soaps like Guiding Light, Riegel intentionally prioritized the live feedback of the theater over screen acting, eventually joining the Upright Citizens Brigade after college.
By moving into voice work, he secured famous parts including Phoenix Wright for the Ace Attorney titles and Donatello within the 2003 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show. However, his most significant commercial impact came through Critical Role, a web series where he and a cast of voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons. The project's success was unprecedented: after leaving their original network in early 2019, the cast launched a Kickstarter to fund an animated adaptation. They set a goal of $750,000 but ultimately raised over $11 million.
This massive community support paved the way for a deal with Amazon Prime Video to produce The Legend of Vox Machina, followed by The Mighty Nein in 2025. Riegel's career also includes high-level directing, earning a Daytime Emmy Award in 2018 for his work on Danger & Eggs. Beyond his professional success, Riegel's personal history includes witnessing the 9/11 attacks in New York City, an event he captured on video, and a recent 2024 health battle with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer.
Riegel's trajectory highlights a shift in the entertainment industry where niche, community-driven content can scale into mainstream success. By leveraging the intimacy of live performance and the engagement of digital platforms, he helped create a production model that bypassed traditional gatekeepers to build a multi-million dollar brand.
