How a sitcom about amnesia lost its memory and its prime time slot
In short: Samantha Who? debuted as a ratings powerhouse, briefly dethroning Two and a Half Men as the highest-rated sitcom on television. Yet, the show’s trajectory from a promising hit to a canceled series reveals the brutal volatility of network scheduling and the fragile nature of television success in the late 2000s.
Created by Cecelia Ahern and Donald Todd, Samantha Who? premiered on ABC on October 15, 2007. The premise followed Samantha Newly, a vice president at a real estate firm who wakes up from a hit-and-run accident with retrograde amnesia. Upon discovering her pre-accident self was selfish and unlikable, she embarks on a quest to redeem her relationships with her dysfunctional parents, Howard and Regina, her friends Andrea and Dena, and her ex-boyfriend, Todd.
The show’s early performance was remarkable. For its first six episodes, it held the title of the highest-rated sitcom, a position previously dominated by Two and a Half Men. It also stood as the highest-rated sitcom to debut during the 2007–2008 season. However, the series faced significant hurdles, including the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike, which limited the first season to 15 episodes despite an initial 22-episode order. Promotional efforts were equally unconventional; early marketing featured a question mark instead of a title, playing on the lead character's memory loss.
By the second season, the show’s momentum stalled. Without the strong lead-in provided by Dancing with the Stars, and paired with the struggling comedy In the Motherhood, viewership plummeted to lows of approximately 4 million. ABC canceled the series in May 2009, burning off the remaining episodes during the summer. Despite its short life, the show left a mark on the industry, with its DVD rights eventually moving from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment to Lionsgate in 2012. The series remains a case study in how shifting time slots and the loss of a powerful lead-in can dismantle even the most successful television debut.
