In short: Before streaming was the industry standard, Sanctuary began as an experimental web series. Its success prompted a transition to television, where it became the first North American show to film exclusively with RED cameras, replacing traditional sets with virtual, CGI-generated environments to push the boundaries of independent production.

Created by Damian Kindler, Sanctuary follows Dr. Helen Magnus, a 157-year-old teratologist who manages a global network of safe havens for extraordinarily powerful creatures known as Abnormals. The series originated as eight webisodes released online in 2007. Following their success, Syfy commissioned a full television season, which premiered in 2008 and ran for 59 episodes across four seasons until its conclusion in 2011.

The show’s production was notably unconventional. Filmed in Vancouver and Burnaby, British Columbia, the series relied heavily on green screen technology rather than physical sets. This choice was partly driven by financial necessity; as an independent production not backed by a major studio, the show redirected funds typically spent on set construction into its visual effects. It was also the first North American series to exclusively utilize the RED camera system, which recorded directly to hard drives at resolutions significantly higher than standard high-definition at the time.

The narrative centers on Magnus and her team, including forensic psychiatrist Will Zimmerman and her assistant, Bigfoot. A core element of the show’s mythology is 'The Five,' a group of experimental Victorian-era scientists—including Nikola Tesla and Dr. James Watson—who injected themselves with a serum derived from vampire blood. This granted them various Abnormal traits, such as Magnus's extreme longevity and Tesla’s electrical manipulation. Throughout the series, the team faces threats from the Cabal, a shadow organization seeking to eradicate Abnormals, and navigates the complexities of an underground civilization called Praxis.

While critics offered mixed reviews, comparing it to series like Torchwood and Primeval, the show achieved significant ratings success upon its debut. Its premiere drew over 3 million viewers, marking it as Syfy's highest-rated original series premiere since 2006. Despite its cancellation in 2012, the series remains a notable example of early digital-first distribution and the creative application of virtual production techniques in television.
