The Tiger of Malaya: How a 19th-century pirate became a global pop icon
In short: Created by Italian author Emilio Salgari in 1883, Sandokan is a legendary pirate hero who has spanned over a century of adaptations. From his origins as the usurped Prince of Borneo to his modern reimagining as an anthropomorphized tiger, this swashbuckling figure remains a fixture of international entertainment.
Sandokan first appeared in 1883, anchoring a series of 11 adventure novels by Emilio Salgari. Known as the Tiger of Malaya, he is a formidable, gallant pirate leader who battles colonial powers like the British and Dutch, as well as the Thugs of India. His character is defined by his fierce, muscular presence and his red silk attire, contrasted against the impulsive nature managed by his loyal Portuguese Goan friend, Yanez De Gomera.
The narrative arc of the original novels follows Sandokan’s quest to reclaim his throne after the East India Company killed his parents. Along the way, he falls for the Pearl of Labuan, Lady Marianna Guillonk, and faces his primary antagonist, the White Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke. By the conclusion of the series, Sandokan defeats his enemies and retires as the rajah of Kini Balù, while Yanez is appointed rajah of Assam.
Beyond the printed page, Sandokan has enjoyed a prolific life in film and television. Italian cinema produced early adaptations in 1941 and 1964, the latter featuring American actors like Steve Reeves. However, the character reached new heights in 1976 with a six-part miniseries starring Kabir Bedi, whose performance became iconic. The series' theme song, composed by the De Angelis brothers, even achieved top-10 status across Europe.
The character’s versatility is evident in his diverse media presence. In 1992, BRB International released an animated series where Sandokan was depicted as an anthropomorphized tiger, while a 2025 international production starring Can Yaman introduced significant creative departures, such as relocating his upbringing to Singapore. Whether in sci-fi reinterpretations or children's animation, the Tiger of Malaya continues to evolve, proving the enduring appeal of Salgari’s original vision.
