In short: Mad About You defined nineties television, following a New York couple through daily life. After a series finale that jumped twenty years into the future, the show returned in 2019. To make the revival work, creators simply erased the original ending, choosing to start fresh as empty nesters instead.

Premiering on NBC in September 1992, Mad About You starred Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt as Paul and Jamie Buchman, a couple navigating life in Greenwich Village. The sitcom became a staple of the network's Must See TV block, eventually earning twelve Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globes. By the final season of its original run, the leads were earning $1 million per episode, though the show faced declining ratings as it was shuffled across different time slots.

The original series concluded in 1999 with a flash-forward finale that depicted the couple's lives over the subsequent two decades. However, when Spectrum Originals picked up a 12-episode limited revival in 2019, the production team chose to ignore those events entirely. Instead, the new season focused on the Buchmans as empty nesters, adjusting to life after their daughter, Mabel, left for college at New York University, located just five blocks from their home.

The revival saw Reiser and Hunt reprise their roles, alongside many recurring cast members. Notably, Leila Kenzle, who played Jamie's best friend Fran Devanow, did not return, having retired from acting in 2003 to become a psychotherapist. The show's legacy remains tied to its unique place in television history, including its cross-over connection to Friends via Lisa Kudrow’s character, Ursula Buffay, and its influence that sparked foreign-language remakes in countries like China, Argentina, and Mexico.
