The punk anthem that became a commercial juggernaut by accident
In short: The Clash were known for rejecting commercial exploitation, yet their hit "Should I Stay or Should I Go" became a global staple through a jeans commercial. It wasn't a planned marketing move, but a moment where rock culture and corporate branding collided, transforming a modest 1982 release into a chart-topping classic.
In the United States, it failed to reach the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100. Despite its eventual fame, the song was noted by scholar Theodore Gracyk in 2007 as being less overtly political than the rest of the band's output on the album Combat Rock, though it still contains a critique of Western values.
The song's composition by Mick Jones shared melodic and chordal similarities with Bill Medley's 1962 track "Little Latin Lupe Lu." While rumors suggested the lyrics were about Jones' personal life or his impending departure from the band, Jones clarified in 1991 that it was simply an attempt to write a "classic" rockin' song. Interestingly, the Spanish backing vocals were a spur-of-the-moment decision by Joe Strummer, translated over the phone by a tape operator's mother in Brooklyn Heights.
The song's massive commercial breakthrough came nearly a decade later in the early 1990s. After the band initially rejected many advertising requests, they allowed Levi's to use the track for a jeans commercial. Mick Jones approved the deal, reasoning that Levi's was already a staple of rock culture. This led to a 1991 re-release that topped the UK Singles Chart, becoming the band's only number-one single in that country.
The track's legacy is cemented by its inclusion in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004 and its high ranking on VH1's 100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs in 2009. It has even faced modern scrutiny, with critics noting how its iconic opening guitar riff influenced later pop hits, sometimes with slight modifications to navigate royalty issues.
