Can a garden gnome solve a mystery when his own existence is in question?
In short: The 2018 animated film Sherlock Gnomes reimagines classic literary figures as garden ornaments in London. While the detective gnome attempts to solve the disappearance of his peers, the production itself faced a lukewarm reception from critics, who questioned the necessity of the sequel to the 2011 original, Gnomeo & Juliet.
Directed by John Stevenson, Sherlock Gnomes serves as a sequel to the 2011 film Gnomeo & Juliet. The story follows garden gnomes Gnomeo and Juliet as they recruit the legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to investigate the mysterious vanishing of their fellow ornaments from a neglected London garden. The film draws heavily on the archetypes of Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective, with characters like Dr. Gnome Watson and the villainous pie mascot Moriarty serving as counterparts to the classic literary figures.
The production process was a complex international effort, involving Mikros Animation studios in London and Paris, with additional work from Reel FX Animation in North America. At its peak, the project employed between 80 and 100 animators who utilized Autodesk Maya software. Interestingly, the animation style was inspired by George Pal’s Puppetoons, while the human characters were brought to life using motion capture technology. The film’s development began as early as 2012, with Elton John returning as an executive producer and composer.
Despite the star-studded voice cast, including Johnny Depp, James McAvoy, and Emily Blunt, the film struggled to find critical favor. It holds a 27% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics famously noting that the film seemed stumped by the reason for its own existence. Commercially, the movie underperformed against its $59 million production budget, grossing $97.5 million worldwide. It debuted in the United States with $10.6 million, falling short of initial projections of $13–18 million. Ultimately, the film remains a curious case study in how beloved literary tropes are adapted into the world of garden-variety animation.
