After seventeen years of dormancy, the swamp is finally reopening for Shrek 5
In short: The long-awaited fifth installment of the Shrek franchise is officially arriving in theaters on June 30, 2027. Featuring the return of original voice actors Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, the film promises a new adventure in the city of Further Further Away, marking a major revival for the series.
The journey to Shrek 5 has been a winding path spanning over two decades. Following the success of Shrek 2 in 2004, then-CEO of DreamWorks Animation Jeffrey Katzenberg initially envisioned a five-film arc. However, by the time Shrek Forever After was released in 2010, the studio had pivoted, branding it the final chapter of the franchise. This decision was later reversed after NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation in 2016 for $3.8 billion, sparking renewed interest in the studio's intellectual property.
Development accelerated significantly under the guidance of Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri, who was tasked with overseeing the franchise's future. The production team has undergone several shifts, with Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon eventually stepping in to direct. The film, which features a script originally penned by Michael McCullers, aims to balance the series' signature edgy humor with the emotional heart that defined the earlier entries. The production process has been extensive, with voice recording concluding in August 2026.
The project has not been without controversy. A first-look trailer released in February 2025 ignited a fierce debate among fans regarding the characters' updated visual style, with some critics comparing the backlash to the initial redesign of Sonic the Hedgehog. Despite these aesthetic tensions, the studio remains committed to the release, which will be followed by a spin-off film centered on Donkey in 2028. Furthermore, actor Mike Myers has reportedly hinted that the studio may have plans for two additional films beyond this fifth installment, suggesting the franchise's future remains expansive.
