In short: When a woman begins taking an experimental antidepressant, a sleepwalking episode leads to a tragic murder. But as her psychiatrist digs deeper, he uncovers a web of manipulation, stock market schemes, and cold-blooded betrayal that suggests the entire tragedy was a carefully orchestrated performance designed to destroy lives.

Released in 2013, the film follows Emily Taylor, a socialite who turns to psychiatric care after her husband, Martin, finishes a four-year prison term for insider trading. Her doctor, Jonathan Banks, eventually prescribes an experimental medication called Ablixa, suggested by her former therapist, Victoria Siebert. The drug is linked to sleepwalking, which becomes the central mechanism of the plot when Emily kills her husband during a nocturnal episode.

The narrative shifts from a medical drama to a complex crime thriller as Banks discovers that Emily’s depression was a fabrication. He realizes that Emily and Victoria were lovers who conspired to murder Martin and manipulate the stock value of the pharmaceutical company behind Ablixa. The duo used their respective knowledge of finance and psychiatric diagnosis to execute the scheme, banking on the legal protections afforded by an insanity plea.

Director Steven Soderbergh, working from a script by Scott Z. Burns, crafted a film that critics frequently compared to the works of Alfred Hitchcock and Henri-Georges Clouzot. The production, which was originally titled The Bitter Pill, faced financing shifts before settling into its final form. It garnered positive critical reception for its structural misdirection and its exploration of the intersection between mental health, corporate influence, and personal vendettas.

The resolution sees Banks turning the tables on the conspirators. By manipulating the legal and medical systems, he ensures Victoria is arrested for conspiracy and securities fraud. Emily, protected by double jeopardy, avoids murder charges but is ultimately confined to a psychiatric ward, where Banks exacts his own form of retribution through the prescription of unpleasant, heavy-duty medications.
