The high-stakes drama of Palm Beach's ultra-rich and their crimes
In short: In the world of the ultra-wealthy, crimes of passion are often hidden behind a veneer of luxury. Silk Stalkings explores the dark side of Palm Beach, where two detectives navigate a landscape of sexual crimes and social status, revealing that extreme wealth does not insulate one from extreme violence.
The series, created by Stephen J. Cannell, premiered on CBS in 1991 as part of the Crimetime After Primetime package. It focused on the lives of detectives Christopher Lorenzo and Rita Lee Lance, who investigated sexually based crimes of passion—referred to in the show's title as "silk stalkings"—among the elite of Palm Beach, Florida. While the setting was Florida, the production was largely based in San Diego, California, and Scottsdale, Arizona. The narrative was unique for its time, utilizing a partially first-person perspective where Rita Lee Lance provided voiceovers throughout the episodes.
The show underwent significant casting shifts that mirrored real-life events. In 1995, the original leads, Rob Estes and Mitzi Kapture, departed the series due to personal reasons. This led to a turbulent transition; the show introduced Nick Kokotakis and Tyler Layton, but the audience largely rejected them, leading to their replacement by Chris Potter and Janet Gunn in season six.
This final pairing, featuring characters who were already divorced, actually revived the show's ratings. Notably, the show's long-running captain, Harry Lipschitz (played by Charlie Brill), eventually achieved a starring credit in the opening titles starting in season six, a feat no previous captain had reached. Behind the scenes, the series was a marathon of production. It ran for eight seasons across two networks, ending in 1999. The show's history is also marked by dramatic plot points, such as the death of the lead character Chris Lorenzo in the line of duty during season five. Despite the heavy drama, the series maintained a sense of continuity, with recurring characters like ADA George Donovan and the comic relief provided by the real-life married couple Charlie Brill and Mitzi McCall appearing throughout the years.
