A disgraced photographer turns private investigator in this hit Florida-based crime drama series
In short: After serving eighteen months for assault, R.J. Decker attempts to rebuild his life in South Florida. This crime drama, inspired by Carl Hiaasen's 1987 novel, follows his transition from a discredited photojournalist to a private investigator navigating a complex web of past enemies, estranged family, and unexpected new allies.
Created by Robert Doherty, the series R.J. Decker debuted on ABC on March 3, 2026. The narrative centers on the titular character, played by Scott Speedman, who finds himself entangled in bizarre cases while grappling with the consequences of a past conviction rooted in false testimony. His journey is complicated by his former wife, Catherine Delacroix, and her current spouse, a Fort Lauderdale police detective named Melody Abreu. The show also introduces a shadowy benefactor, Emilia Ochoa, whose father, a corrupt state senator named Victor Ochoa, was responsible for Decker's original imprisonment.
The production process began with an ABC pilot order in May 2025, followed by a full series order in September 2025. Filming took place across Wilmington, North Carolina, and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, spanning from the summer of 2025 through April 2026. The show's cast underwent several changes during development, including the recasting of the role of Emilia Ochoa in November 2025. By May 8, 2026, the network signaled confidence in the project by ordering a second season, which subsequently premiered on September 15, 2026, featuring the addition of Beau Bridges as Decker's estranged father.
Critically, the series has maintained a generally positive reception, holding an 80% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 67 out of 100 on Metacritic. Its commercial performance was notable, with the premiere drawing 3.69 million live viewers. This debut marked ABC's strongest 10:00 p.m. drama launch in over five years. Within six days of its initial broadcast, the show reached 11.64 million viewers across various platforms, including Hulu and Disney+, where it secured the top spot on daily streaming charts.
