In short: Created for NRK P3 with minimal promotion, Skam captured a massive international audience by releasing content in real-time snippets throughout the week. By focusing on the authentic pressures of teenage life in Oslo, the series broke Norwegian viewership records and redefined how digital-first storytelling can resonate across borders.

Created by Julie Andem, Skam followed the daily lives of students at the Hartvig Nissen School in Oslo. Andem utilized the NABC production model, conducting hours-long interviews with individual teenagers to identify their specific needs and pressures. She aimed to blend social realism, soap opera, and sitcom, allowing the show to transition fluidly between comical and dramatic moments. Despite the perception of improvisation, the scripts were meticulously written with no room for ad-libbing.

The show's release strategy was unconventional. Clips, social media posts, and conversations were published on the Skam website throughout the week, culminating in a full episode every Friday. This real-time format, combined with a deliberate lack of traditional marketing, allowed the series to grow organically through social media. By the second season, Skam accounted for half of NRK's online traffic. The production was notably cost-efficient, with seasons two and three costing a combined NOK 10 million.

Each of the four seasons focused on a different main character, exploring themes like identity, mental illness, religion, and the pressures of performance. The production was described by editorial chief Håkon Moslet as an extreme sport, requiring a 24/7 commitment from the team. After four seasons, Andem decided to end the show in 2017, believing it was the right time to conclude the narrative. The cast, who were shielded from media attention during the show's run, finally spoke to the public just before the series finale.
