How François Truffaut captured the fragile, chaotic, and resilient spirit of childhood in 1976
In short: Small Change is a poignant exploration of childhood innocence and the harsh realities of abuse. Set in the French town of Thiers, the film weaves together the lives of children navigating first loves, schoolyard antics, and profound injustice, ultimately delivering a powerful message about the necessity of love and resilience.
Directed by François Truffaut, Small Change—known as L'Argent de poche in France—emerged from years of collected anecdotes, some autobiographical, dating back to the era of his earlier work, The 400 Blows. By 1972, the project existed only as a ten-page synopsis. Truffaut began serious development in 1974, intentionally avoiding a rigid script to allow for improvisation. After scouting locations in April 1975, he settled on the town of Thiers, where filming spanned from 17 July until October 1975. The initial rough cut was three hours long.
The narrative centers on two boys: Patrick Desmouceaux, a motherless child navigating early romantic interests, and Julien Leclou, who suffers from severe physical abuse at home. Their struggles are interspersed with vignettes of childhood life, ranging from a toddler surviving a fall from a windowsill to the awkwardness of first kisses and botched haircuts. The film culminates in a poignant monologue by a teacher, emphasizing that while life is inherently unfair, children require love, endurance, and protection against the most despicable of injustices.
Upon its 1976 release, the film achieved significant success, recording over 1.8 million admissions in France and ranking as the 17th most popular film of the year there. It resonated globally, finding audiences in the US, Germany, Scandinavia, and Japan. Critical reception was overwhelmingly positive; Roger Ebert named it his favorite film of the year, while Vincent Canby praised it as a major work in minor keys. The film earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Foreign Film and was entered into the 26th Berlin International Film Festival, cementing its status as a poetic, wise, and perceptive masterpiece of world cinema.
