In short: Director Parker Finn designed the climax of his 2024 horror sequel to implicate the viewer. By framing the pop star protagonist's final, gruesome act as a performance for an arena audience, the film asks a haunting question: are we, as spectators, complicit in the destruction of the characters we consume?

Smile 2 follows Skye Riley, a pop star attempting a comeback after a public struggle with substance abuse and a fatal car crash. As she prepares for her tour, she witnesses a traumatic suicide that passes a parasitic, supernatural curse onto her. The entity, which manifests as a smiling, skinless creature, forces its victims into a cycle of psychological deterioration and hallucinations, eventually compelling them to kill themselves in front of witnesses to ensure the curse continues.

Writer-director Parker Finn, who also helmed the 2022 original, sought to expand the franchise by placing the entity in the high-pressure, glitzy world of pop stardom. Naomi Scott, who portrays Skye, drew inspiration for the role from the public lives of pop icons like Lady Gaga and Britney Spears in the early 2010s. The production, which had a budget of $28 million, was filmed in early 2024 across New York's Hudson Valley and New York City. It grossed $138.1 million worldwide, outperforming the opening weekend of its predecessor.

The film’s ending is intentionally meta, with Finn aiming to bridge the gap between the fictional audience in the arena and the real-world audience in the theater. By forcing the viewer to watch Skye’s final, violent breakdown, Finn challenges the audience to consider whether their demand for entertainment—and their return for a sequel—is what ultimately drives the character's downfall. While some critics felt the film borrowed too heavily from other horror tropes, others praised the performance of Scott and the film's ability to blur the lines between reality and hallucination.

Following the film's commercial success, a third installment is already in development, with filming expected to begin in 2026. Finn has expressed a desire to keep the entity’s origins mysterious, preferring to explore the world of the franchise in fresh, unpredictable ways. He views the series as a lineage where each subsequent film can push the boundaries of the premise further, suggesting that the current story is merely a small part of a much larger, darker ocean.
