A failed bank robbery turns into a million-dollar cookie empire in this comedy
In short: Woody Allen’s 2000 film Small Time Crooks follows a bumbling ex-convict whose plan to tunnel into a bank vault collapses, only for his wife’s cookie business to unexpectedly skyrocket. It is a story of sudden wealth, social climbing, and the enduring, messy reality of love and class.
Released on May 19, 2000, Small Time Crooks features Ray Winkler, a dishwasher who attempts to rob a bank by digging a tunnel from a rented pizzeria. When the heist fails, the cookie shop his wife, Frenchy, runs as a front becomes a massive success. The couple quickly transitions from working-class life to the heights of American society, though the shift leaves Ray feeling alienated and longing for his simpler past.
The film explores the friction between newfound wealth and cultural assimilation. Frenchy enlists an art dealer named David Perrette to refine their manners and taste, a process Ray finds unbearable. As Frenchy becomes increasingly entangled in David’s schemes, the couple’s marriage fractures. The narrative takes a sharp turn when Frenchy is defrauded by her accountants, losing her entire fortune and being abandoned by David, who was only interested in her money.
Critics generally received the film well, noting it as a return to Allen’s roots in off-beat comedy. While the film grossed $29.9 million globally against a $25 million budget, it performed notably better in North America than in international markets. The film’s plot bears similarities to the 1942 comedy Larceny, Inc., though Allen has never confirmed if this was intentional. Despite the professional success of the production, which earned Tracey Ullman a Golden Globe nomination and Elaine May a National Society of Film Critics Award, the story remains a lighthearted reflection on the absurdity of social mobility.
