In short: After a high-stakes battle with Doctor Eggman goes wrong, Sonic accidentally destroys the Paradox Prism. This reality-bending catastrophe splits the world into the Shatterverse, a collection of five distinct dimensions. To fix his mistake, Sonic must navigate these strange new worlds and confront alternate versions of his closest friends.
The animated series Sonic Prime, which ran from December 2022 to January 2024, follows Sonic as he attempts to repair the damage caused by the shattered Paradox Prism. The destruction of this crystalline artifact transformed his home into the lifeless Ghost Hill and birthed the Shatterverse. This new reality consists of five Shatterspaces, each shaped by a Prism shard and populated by variants of Sonic's companions, such as Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, and Big. Notably, these dimensions lack their own versions of Sonic, leaving him as the sole bridge between these fractured worlds.
Sonic's journey takes him through diverse environments, including the dystopian New Yoke City, the jungle-like Boscage Maze, and the flooded world of No Place. In New Yoke City, Sonic faces the Chaos Council, a group of five Doctor Eggman variants who rule the city and seek to conquer the Shatterverse by collecting all five shards. Meanwhile, Sonic encounters complex counterparts like Tails Nine, a bitter inventor who built extra mechanical tails to survive, and Rusty Rose, a cyborg Amy variant struggling with her loyalties. These characters highlight the profound impact of Sonic's absence in their respective realities.
The conflict escalates when Nine, fearing that restoring the primary universe would erase the Shatterverse, attempts to use the Prism to create his own ideal reality. This betrayal forces an unlikely alliance between Sonic, his rival Shadow the Hedgehog, and the Chaos Council to prevent the total collapse of the Shatterspaces. Ultimately, Sonic succeeds in stabilizing the dimensions and restoring his original reality, but the effort nearly costs him his life. By returning to the moment before the Prism shattered, Sonic and Shadow manage to stop Eggman, effectively resetting the timeline and preventing the catastrophe from ever occurring.
