A role-playing war where magic is fueled by flatulence
In short: In the fictional town of South Park, a high-stakes fantasy war erupts over a twig of limitless power. But this isn't your standard RPG. Here, the New Kid navigates a chaotic world where humans and elves battle for dominance using a unique magic system fueled entirely by flatulence and various fart attacks.
To replicate the animated show's unique style, Obsidian Entertainment worked alongside South Park Digital Studios to create the title. The narrative escalates from a backyard role-play into a chaotic conflict involving aliens, Nazi zombies, and government conspiracies. Mechanically, the game utilizes a 2.5D third-person perspective with turn-based combat. Players choose from four archetypes: Fighter, Thief, Mage, or Jew. The 'Jew' archetype focuses on long-distance strikes and 'Jew-jitsu', unlike the three typical fantasy archetypes. Interestingly, class restrictions are fluid; for instance, a Mage can still focus on melee attacks like a Fighter. Combat is further defined by a unique magic system where spells are represented by farts. Players can use specific "farts" like the "Cup-A-Spell" to interact with objects or the "Nagasaki" to destroy blockades.
The production of the game was notably turbulent. It began in 2009 after creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone approached Obsidian. Ubisoft purchased the title's rights during early 2013, after the initial publisher, THQ, went bankrupt. This led to several postponements, moving the release from March 2013 to March 2014. The game also faced regional censorship due to its depiction of abortions and Nazi imagery, leading Parker and Stone to replace those scenes with detailed written explanations. The game's world includes iconic locations like the Bijou Cinema and Tweek Bros. Coffeehouse, as well as a 16-bit RPG representation of Canada. Players can also interact with a Facebook page that serves as the main menu, where befriending characters unlocks permanent stat perks. The narrative culminates in a desperate mission to disarm a nuclear device hidden in the character Mr. Slave's anus, requiring the New Kid to shrink and enter him to save the town.
