The high-stakes pursuit of musical excellence in Kitauji High School
In short: In Uji, Kyoto, the Kitauji High School Music Club is fighting to reclaim its former glory. Once a championship-caliber ensemble, the band has struggled to even qualify for national tournaments following a change in leadership. Now, under strict new instruction, the students must navigate intense competition and personal sacrifices to succeed.
The narrative, originally a novel series by Ayano Takeda, centers on the Kitauji High School Concert Band Club. The story follows Kumiko Oumae, an indecisive euphonium player who struggles to express her true wishes. As the club strives to return to national-level competition under the methodical guidance of their new adviser, Taki, the students face internal pressures, including fierce competition for solo positions and the difficult choice between musical dedication and academic studies.
The ensemble's journey is depicted through various media adaptations by Kyoto Animation. This includes two television seasons aired in 2015 and 2016, which cover Kumiko's first year of high school. The story expands into theatrical territory with the 2018 film Liz and the Blue Bird and the 2019 film Sound! Euphonium: Our Promise: A Brand New Day, both of which follow Kumiko during her second year.
The complexity of the club is reflected in its diverse membership. While some, like the dedicated trumpet player Reina, devote themselves to practice even outside of club hours, others like Natsuki Nakagawa struggle with motivation before finding their drive. The series also explores the social dynamics of the group, such as the facade maintained by vice president Asuka and the quiet, complex relationships between players like Mizore Yoreizuka and her middle school friend Nozomi.
The franchise continues to evolve, with a third season focusing on Kumiko's third year of high school that aired in 2024, following the 2023 theatrical OVA Ensemble Contest.
