In short: What happens when a master puzzle-solver and a defense attorney team up to solve a supernatural mystery? This crossover brings together the investigative logic of Professor Layton and the high-stakes courtroom drama of Ace Attorney to uncover the truth behind a town of illusions.

On 29 November 2012, Japan saw the launch of Professor Layton vs. Capcom and Level-5 created Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, a puzzle-based visual novel adventure. The narrative follows Professor Layton, his apprentice Luke Triton, Phoenix Wright, and Maya Fey as they investigate the mystery of Labyrinthia. The gameplay is split into two distinct styles: Adventure, where players explore environments and solve puzzles to earn Picarats, and Witch Trials, where Phoenix Wright cross-examines witnesses to find contradictions in their statements.

The story takes a dark turn when the protagonists discover that the magical elements of Labyrinthia are actually illusions. The town is a research facility where residents are exposed to a mind-controlling substance in the groundwater. This substance causes people to lose consciousness when they hear silver being struck, a phenomenon that led to the catastrophic 'Legendary Fire' millennia ago. The perceived 'witches' and magical phenomena were actually psychological constructs created by the Storyteller, Arthur Cantabella, to counteract the psychological effects of the chemical exposure.

The crossover itself was born from an ambitious proposal by Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino. Despite initial skepticism from Capcom's Keiji Inafune, who believed Shu Takumi might refuse the collaboration, Hino successfully convinced the Ace Attorney creator to participate. Takumi provided scenario design and creative control, ensuring the crossover maintained the essence of both franchises. The game's success in blending these mechanics even influenced future Ace Attorney titles, which adopted animated cutscenes and voice acting as a new standard.
