A deadly assassin seeks redemption with a reverse-bladed sword
In short: In the Meiji era, a former political killer wanders Japan as a pacifist. The 2023 Rurouni Kenshin series re-imagines this classic manga with a serious tone, trading slapstick comedy for realistic period details and fluid, high-stakes sword fights that aim to honor the original source material.
The 2023 television series, produced by Liden Films, serves as a modern re-adaptation of Nobuhiro Watsuki's original manga. Unlike the 1996–98 anime, director Hideyo Yamamoto sought to establish a more serious atmosphere. This was achieved by minimizing 'super-deformed' elements and reducing the protagonist's signature comedic interjection, 'Oro?', to prioritize realism and character depth.
The narrative follows Himura Kenshin, a man attempting to lead a path of peace after a life as the feared assassin Hitokiri Battōsai. To uphold his vow to never again take a life, he wields a sakabatō, or reverse-bladed sword. To heighten the Meiji-era atmosphere, the studio employed 3DCG for landscapes and CGI for historical items such as horse-drawn carriages.
The series features updated character artwork designed to appeal to both longtime fans and a new Reiwa era audience. While costumes remain faithful to the period, the character designs by Terumi Nishii were modernized. Airing on Fuji TV's Noitamina block, the 24-episode inaugural season ran from 7 July until 15 December 2023. A second season, titled Kyoto Disturbance, followed from October 4, 2024, to March 21, 2025.
The adaptation has seen significant expansion and continuity. Following the second season, Aniplex announced a third season renewal at AnimeJapan 2025 on March 22, 2025. Producer Masami Niwa has also expressed interest in adapting the Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc manga in the future.
