The superhero show that beat The Beatles in the ratings
In short: In 1966, a new era of television demanded action over comedy. To meet this demand, CBS commissioned a superhero who would not only define a generation of animation but also outperform one of the biggest musical acts in history during a pivotal Saturday morning slot.
Space Ghost debuted on CBS on September 10, 1966, as part of a 'superhero morning' initiative. The goal was to blend classic superhero iconography with the burgeoning Space Age. To achieve this, CBS executive Fred Silverman specifically requested a 'Batman look' for the character, using the March 1966 cover of Life magazine featuring Adam West as his primary visual reference. This shift was a significant pivot for Hanna-Barbera, which had previously focused on short-form comedies like The Yogi Bear Show.
The series was a massive success, eventually securing the number one spot in its time slot. In a notable ratings feat, Space Ghost earned a 9.6 rating with a 44 share, successfully beating the second season of The Beatles on ABC, which trailed with a 7.6 rating and a 36 share. Between 1967 and 1969, this triumph triggered numerous comparable action-adventure series featuring superheroes on every primary television station.
Despite its early dominance, the series faced internal competition. When the show 'The Herculoids' achieved a 60 share in the ratings—beating Space Ghost's previous 55 share—Silverman opted to pool support behind The Herculoids instead of ordering more Space Ghost episodes. The character's legacy, however, endured through a 1994 transition into an adult parody talk show, Space Ghost Coast to Coast, which influenced a decade of Adult Swim programming and even inspired the format of The Eric Andre Show.
