How a government assassin became the longest-running independent comic book hero in history
In short: Created by Todd McFarlane at age 16, Spawn debuted in 1992 as a dark, supernatural antihero. After a deal with the devil goes wrong, Al Simmons returns to Earth as a Hellspawn. He struggles to balance his newfound demonic powers with a desperate, lingering desire to atone for his past sins.
Al Simmons was a highly decorated U.S. Marine and CIA-trained assassin before his partner, Bruce Stinson, murdered him under orders from Director Jason Wynn. Upon dying, Simmons made a pact with the demon Malebolgia to see his wife, Wanda, one last time. He returned to Earth five years later as a Hellspawn, a creature fueled by necroplasm, with his memories fragmented and his body severely burned.
The character's debut in May 1992 was a landmark moment for the industry, selling 1.7 million copies. This success was part of a broader speculator boom, but Spawn maintained its status as a top-selling title for years. By the time it reached its 300th issue, it had secured its place as the longest-running independent comic book series ever published. The franchise has since expanded into an expansive universe, with spin-offs like King Spawn and Gunslinger Spawn achieving massive pre-order numbers in 2021.
Spawn's narrative is defined by constant conflict with both Heaven and Hell. Throughout his journey, he has battled angelic warriors like Angela and the Redeemer, faced the demonic Clown, and even confronted the literal manifestations of God and Satan. Despite his immense power, Simmons is often haunted by his own history, including his past abuse of Wanda, which leads him to reject the possibility of returning to his human life. He remains a complex, tragic figure, perpetually caught between his desire for redemption and the dark reality of his demonic existence.
