Can a telepathic space spider help a lonely astronaut repair his broken marriage?
In short: In the 2024 film Spaceman, a Czech cosmonaut drifting near the edge of the Solar System encounters an unlikely companion: a giant, telepathic spider. As the creature probes his memories to understand human loneliness, the astronaut must confront the painful neglect that fractured his relationship with his pregnant wife back home.
Directed by Johan Renck and adapted from Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 book, Spaceman follows Jakub Procházka, a cosmonaut six months into a solitary mission to investigate a mysterious cosmic cloud called Chopra. While Jakub navigates the void, his life on Earth is unraveling; his wife, Lenka, has cut off communication after he abandoned her to pursue his career. Unknown to Jakub, his commanding officer, Commissioner Tuma, has intercepted Lenka’s message of separation to protect the mission’s integrity.
The narrative shifts when Jakub discovers Hanuš, a spider-like extraterrestrial hiding aboard his ship. Voiced by Paul Dano, Hanuš serves as a psychological mirror, forcing Jakub to revisit traumatic memories, including his father’s history as a state informant and his own failure to support Lenka during a miscarriage. This intimate exploration of regret and human connection is set against the backdrop of a high-stakes space race, as a South Korean vessel competes to reach the Chopra cloud first.
The film, which features Adam Sandler in a dramatic lead role, faced production delays due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike before its eventual March 2024 release on Netflix. Critics have remained divided on the result. While some praise the sensitive performances and atmospheric score by Max Richter, others argue that the film’s reliance on literal storytelling undermines the philosophical potential of its sci-fi premise. Ultimately, the story culminates at the Chopra cloud—a place where all moments in time exist simultaneously—offering Jakub a surreal chance to reconcile with his past and his wife.
The production process spanned from April to July 2021, with filming locations ranging from New York City to the Czech Republic. Despite the mixed critical reception, with a 50% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film remains a notable entry in the genre for its focus on internal emotional landscapes rather than traditional space-faring spectacle. It highlights the tension between the vast, indifferent nature of the universe and the small, persistent weight of human guilt.
