From dairy farms to world records, a broadcaster's journey of endurance
In short: Helen Skelton is known as a familiar face on British television, but her career is defined by more than just hosting. Beyond the studio lights, she has pushed human limits through grueling ultra-marathons, solo kayak journeys across continents, and record-breaking kite skiing to the South Pole.
Born in 1983 on a dairy farm in Cumbria, Helen Skelton’s path to broadcasting was built on a foundation of journalism. After graduating from the Cumbria Institute of the Arts with a BA in journalism, she worked her way through public relations and local radio. By 2005, she became one of the youngest breakfast presenters on the BBC network at BBC Radio Cumbria. This early start paved the way for high-profile roles, including becoming the 33rd presenter for the iconic children's show Blue Peter in 2008, where she reported from major events like Wimbledon and the Championships.
While her television career includes hosting Countryfile and various daytime series, Skelton gained international recognition for her extreme physical feats. In 2009, she became only the second woman to finish the 78-mile Namibian ultra marathon in under a day. She followed this with an ambitious solo kayak journey from Peru to Brazil in 2010, covering 2,010 miles. Two Guinness World Records were awarded to her: a woman's longest 24-hour kayak distance and the furthest solo trip by kayak.
Skelton’s commitment to endurance continued with unique challenges for charity. She reached the South Pole on a bicycle for the first time in 2012, employing an 82 kg sled pulled via skis, a kite, and bespoke wheels of 8 inches. While on this expedition, she established a world record for completing 100 km using a kite ski in just seven hours and 28 minutes. Whether walking tightropes at Battersea Power Station or competing in celebrity boxing matches, her career exemplifies a blend of public service broadcasting and personal physical mastery.
Her influence extends beyond the screen into literature and voice acting, having published a novel in 2015 and an autobiography in 2023. She also voiced the character Annie Morris in Fireman Sam starting in 2023. Her journey reflects a transition from rural roots to becoming a versatile media figure who uses her platform to inspire viewers through record-breaking perseverance.
