In short: Sub-Zero is not one man, but a mantle held by brothers Bi-Han and Kuai Liang. A cornerstone of the Mortal Kombat franchise, this cryomancer has evolved from a mysterious palette-swapped ninja into a complex, aging warrior who has appeared in every main installment of the series since 1992.

Conceived by John Tobias as a mysterious ninja named Tundra, Sub-Zero was originally inspired by literature regarding the Lin Kuei clan. To resolve debates about the historical origins of ninjas, the developers split the character into two, assigning one Chinese and one Japanese heritage. The mantle was first worn by Bi-Han in the 1992 original game. After Bi-Han was killed by the specter Scorpion and transformed into the undead Noob Saibot, his younger brother Kuai Liang assumed the identity in 1993's Mortal Kombat II, bringing a more compassionate and heroic temperament to the role.

The character's visual evolution reflects the series' technical and narrative shifts. Originally portrayed by non-Asian actors, the character's backstory was later adjusted to explain his appearance. Since Mortal Kombat 3, Sub-Zero has been defined by a distinctive scar across his right eye, a mark of death that has faded and reappeared across various titles. His design has drawn inspiration from everything from Dynastic-era Chinese armor to Batman, with developers even aging the character in later entries—a rarity for the franchise. His signature ice-based combat mechanics, particularly his ability to freeze opponents, have been lauded as some of the most practical and influential innovations in fighting game history.

Beyond the games, Sub-Zero has appeared in comics, live-action films, and animated series, portrayed by actors such as Joe Taslim and voiced by performers like Steve Blum. While his legacy is cemented as one of the most iconic figures in gaming, his characterization remains a point of debate. Critics have praised his emotional depth in adaptations like Mortal Kombat: Legacy, yet others have criticized his portrayal in recent entries, noting that his shift toward villainy in Mortal Kombat 1 feels forced. Despite these critiques, Sub-Zero remains a central pillar of the franchise, continually reinvented as the series' timeline shifts.
