At this magical summer camp, the counselors are witches and the sharks are therapists
In short: Summer Camp Island follows two childhood best friends, Oscar and Hedgehog, as they navigate a bizarre summer camp populated by anthropomorphic animals. From haunted cabins to portals hidden in post-it notes, the island is a surreal landscape where the supernatural is mundane and the counselors are centuries-old witches.
Created by Julia Pott for Cartoon Network, Summer Camp Island centers on the episodic adventures of Oscar, an 11-year-old elephant, and Hedgehog, his logical best friend. While the premise sounds like a standard getaway, the camp is far from ordinary. It is supervised by Susie, a 400-year-old witch who gained immortality through a potion, alongside fellow counselors Alice, a powerful woolly mammoth, and Betsy, a secret werewolf. The island itself is a hub for strange occurrences, featuring talking sharks who work as therapists, yetis, and monsters that reside under beds.
The series explores the growth of its protagonists as they contend with the island's magical anomalies. Oscar, initially socially awkward, discovers his own latent magic as a glow worm, while Hedgehog navigates her own transformation into a werewolf after being bitten by the Werewolf Queen. Their experiences are shaped by a diverse cast of inhabitants, ranging from sentient pajamas and athletic giraffes to a sun with a New Zealand accent. The narrative balances these whimsical elements with grounded themes of friendship, independence, and the challenges of growing up.
The show's production history reflects the shifting landscape of modern animation. Premiering in 2018 with a 48-hour marathon, the series moved through various distribution models, including exclusive runs on HBO Max before its final season returned to Cartoon Network in 2023. Despite the logistical changes, the core of the show remains its commitment to a world where the bizarre is a daily reality. Whether it is navigating the complexities of magic lessons with Susie or managing the social dynamics of camp life, Oscar and Hedgehog find that the most important part of their stay is the bond they share.
