A dark teen thriller was fundamentally reshaped by the tragedy at Columbine High School.
In short: Originally titled Killing Mrs. Tingle, Kevin Williamson’s directorial debut was meant to be a gritty, R-rated revenge fantasy. Following the 1999 Columbine massacre, the film faced a massive overhaul, resulting in a softened PG-13 cut that struggled to find its footing with critics and audiences at the box office.
Written by Kevin Williamson before his breakout success with Scream and Dawson's Creek, the project was initially conceived as a dark comedy-thriller. In its original form, the film featured a more ruthless protagonist in Leigh Ann Watson, a student who would stop at nothing to secure her future. The tone was intentionally bleak, and the script included character deaths that were ultimately excised during the post-production process.
The film’s trajectory shifted dramatically following the April 20, 1999, Columbine High School massacre. In the wake of intense public outcry regarding the depiction of violence in media, the studio delayed the release from its original schedule. The production team undertook significant reshoots and re-editing to secure a PG-13 rating, effectively stripping away the darker elements that defined the initial vision. When it finally debuted in August 1999, the film was retitled Teaching Mrs. Tingle.
Despite the involvement of Helen Mirren, who was praised for elevating the role of the vindictive history teacher, the film failed to resonate. It was a box-office disappointment, grossing approximately $8.95 million against an estimated $13 million budget. Critical reception was largely unfavorable, with reviewers noting a lack of both humor and genuine thrills. While some critics found it an entertaining, if junky, revenge fantasy, many others compared it unfavorably to similar genre entries, marking a difficult start for Williamson’s career as a director.
