In short: What if a single night could be a rom-com, a thriller, or a tragedy depending on who is telling the story? Inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, this series deconstructs the reliability of memory by presenting a murder through the distinct cinematic lenses of its witnesses.

Created by Christopher Miller, The Afterparty premiered on Apple TV+ in January 2022. The series utilizes a unique structural device where each episode explores a different character's perspective of the same event. This allows the narrative to shift genres—from high-stakes drama to comedy—based on the specific emotional state and history of the witness providing the POV.

The concept originated in the early 2010s as a feature-length screenplay titled The Reunion. Miller initially envisioned it as a film but transitioned it to a mini-series to allow for deeper character development. This expansion also facilitated the 'genre-hopping' mechanic, where the show's aesthetic changes to match the internal life of the narrator, a style critic Olivia Rutigliano calls 'the millennial whodunnit.'

The first season centers on a high school reunion after-party, while the second season moves to a wedding after-party. Both seasons feature a recurring cast, including Detective Danner (Tiffany Haddish) and escape room designer Aniq Adjaye (Sam Richardson). Despite the series being canceled in October 2023 after two seasons, it remains a notable example of non-linear, multi-perspective storytelling that prioritizes the subjective experience of truth over a single objective reality.

The series also incorporates meta-commentary on its own production. For instance, the second season features a film-within-a-show, 'X Marks the Murder Spot,' which serves as a narrative bridge between the events of the first and second seasons while featuring various cast members in fictionalized roles.
