Can a fractured memory hide a dangerous truth about stolen wealth?
In short: When Sophie Ellis suffers extreme memory loss after a jump from a San Francisco ferry, her new life seems stable. But as her past resurfaces, she discovers her husband and an undercover policeman are hiding secrets that challenge everything she believes about her own identity.
Created by Veronica West for Apple TV+, Surface is a psychological thriller that explores the fragility of identity through the lens of amnesia. The story follows Sophie Ellis, portrayed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who struggles to reconstruct her life after an apparent suicide attempt. While she initially attempts to build a new existence with her husband, James, a venture capitalist at the firm Ascendant, the truth proves far more complex than a simple medical trauma.
The narrative tension hinges on a web of deception involving several key figures. Sophie learns she was involved in an extramarital relationship with Thomas Baden, a detective working undercover. While Baden attempts to convince her that James has been embezzling funds, Sophie’s returning memories reveal a startling reversal: she was the one who stole the money, hiding it in an account under the alias Tess Caldwell. This revelation prompts her to orchestrate her own death and return to England to uncover her true history.
The series has met with mixed critical reception. The first season, which premiered on July 29, 2022, received a 46% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 49 out of 100. Critics described the show as an 'overheated potboiler' that struggled with a 'derivative amnesia mystery.' Despite these reviews, the series was renewed for a second season in December 2022, which aired between February 21, 2025, and April 11, 2025, shifting its production focus to London.
