In short: Virgil Oldman is a reclusive auctioneer who spends his life acquiring masterpieces through elaborate scams. When he meets a mysterious, agoraphobic heiress, his carefully controlled world unravels. This psychological thriller explores the thin line between authentic connection and the masterful forgeries we construct to protect ourselves from the truth.

Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, the 2013 film The Best Offer follows Virgil Oldman, an esteemed auctioneer played by Geoffrey Rush. Oldman is a meticulous bachelor who avoids human contact and maintains a secret vault of priceless female portraits, all acquired by misattributing them to lesser artists with the help of his associate, Billy Whistler. His solitary existence is disrupted when he is hired by Claire Ibbetson, an agoraphobic heiress, to appraise her family's estate. As their relationship develops through a locked door, Oldman finds himself genuinely in love for the first time.

The narrative takes a dark turn when Oldman discovers mechanical parts belonging to the 18th-century inventor Jacques de Vaucanson. He enlists a young restorer named Robert to assemble these pieces into an automaton. This collaboration, alongside his growing obsession with Claire, leads Oldman toward a devastating revelation. After he retires and prepares for a new life, he returns home to find his collection stolen and his lover gone. He discovers that he has been the target of a sophisticated con orchestrated by Robert, Claire, and Billy, who exploited his own history of fraud to orchestrate his downfall.

The film, which features a score by Ennio Morricone, received mixed critical reception upon its release. While some critics praised Rush's performance and the film's atmospheric mystery, others found the script overly explanatory and the plot convoluted. Despite the polarized reviews, the story remains a meditation on authenticity. As the automaton left in the empty vault reminds Oldman, there is always something genuine hidden within every forgery—a bitter irony for a man who spent his life surrounded by stolen beauty.
