In short: The 2004 heist comedy The Big Bounce was a notorious box office bomb, grossing only a fraction of its massive budget. Behind the scenes, the production was plagued by on-set injuries, creative clashes over ratings, and a final cut that the director refused to claim as his own work.

Directed by George Armitage, the 2004 adaptation of Elmore Leonard's 1969 novel starred Owen Wilson, Charlie Sheen, Sara Foster, and Morgan Freeman. The production was troubled from the start; on the first day of pre-production, Armitage was struck in the eye by a piece of lava rock and later contracted a virus, forcing a production shutdown during the Christmas season. Despite the beautiful Hawaii location and producer Steve Bing’s generosity—which reportedly included $250,000 in bar tabs for the cast and crew—the film struggled to find its footing.

The project faced a significant turning point during post-production. Armitage’s original cut received an NC-17 rating, which the studio deemed unreleasable. While Armitage preferred an R rating, producers insisted on a PG-13 rating, believing it was the only way to ensure profitability. Disagreeing with the studio's decision to re-edit the film, which he felt would eliminate the essence of Leonard’s writing, Armitage left the project after his second cut. He later stated that he refuses to show the released version, preferring to share his own cut when asked about his final directing role.

The result was a critical and commercial failure. The film grossed only $6,808,550 against a $50 million budget. Critics were harsh, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 16% approval rating and CinemaScore audiences awarding it a grade of D. Even the source material's author, Elmore Leonard, was famously scathing, reportedly calling the 1969 adaptation the second-worst movie ever made, surpassed only by this 2004 remake. The film remains a cautionary tale of creative compromise and the difficulty of adapting Leonard’s distinct narrative style.
