A supernatural thriller that explores the terrifying cost of regaining one's lost sight
In short: In this 2008 horror remake, a blind violinist undergoes a cornea transplant that restores her vision, only to be haunted by visions of the dead. As she struggles to distinguish reality from the supernatural, she discovers her new eyes reveal a grim purpose: witnessing the final moments of those destined to die.
Directed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud, the 2008 film The Eye is an American adaptation of the 2002 Hong Kong original by the Pang brothers. The narrative follows Sydney Wells, a classical musician who has been blind since childhood. Following a successful transplant, her sight returns, but it brings with it disturbing glimpses of fire and death. Her journey to uncover the truth behind her donor, Ana Cristina Martinez, leads her to Mexico, where she learns that the visions were premonitions of a tragic industrial accident.
The film’s production was largely centered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which stood in for Los Angeles, though specific establishing shots were captured at the Los Angeles General Medical Center. To prepare for the role, lead actress Jessica Alba consulted with blind soprano Jessica Bachicha, studying the nuances of using a white cane and reading Braille. Despite the technical preparation, the film faced significant critical backlash, with many reviewers labeling it a tedious remake and criticizing the performances.
Commercially, the movie opened at second place in the U.S. box office, eventually accumulating a total international gross of over $56 million. While Alba received a nomination for a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress, she also secured a win at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards. The film remains part of a broader lineage of adaptations, following earlier iterations like the 1990 Telugu film Kokila and the 2005 Hindi film Naina, all exploring the unsettling premise of sight as a burden rather than a gift.
