In short: In the 2008 animated feature The Flight Before Christmas, a young reindeer named Niko dreams of joining his father in Santa's elite Flying Forces. Burdened by a paralyzing fear of heights and a pack of wolves threatening the North Pole, Niko must discover his own courage to save the holiday.

Originally titled Niko & The Way to the Stars, this 2008 animated production was a collaborative effort between Finland, Denmark, Germany, and Ireland. The film follows Niko, who is told by his mother, Oona, that his father is a member of the legendary Flying Forces. Despite his aspirations, Niko struggles with an inability to fly and a deep-seated fear of heights, which leads him to leave his herd in search of Santa's secret fell.

The narrative takes a dark turn when a pack of wolves, led by the villainous Black Wolf, discovers the location of Santa's home. The wolves plan to eliminate Santa and his reindeer to take over the sleigh and hunt children. Niko, accompanied by his friend Julius—a flying squirrel—and a white weasel named Wilma, faces numerous perils, including avalanches and a dangerous river, while attempting to warn the Flying Forces of the impending attack.

The climax occurs when the wolves infiltrate the valley, causing the reindeer to lose their power of flight due to fear. In a moment of desperation, Niko realizes his potential, successfully flying to save Julius from a fall. Following the defeat of the wolves, Niko discovers that Prancer is his father. While offered a place in the Flying Forces, Niko ultimately chooses to return to his mother and Julius, though he maintains a connection with his father.

The film, which features an original score by Stephen McKeon, was released in North America as a direct-to-video title in October 2008. It has since spawned two sequels: Little Brother, Big Trouble: A Christmas Adventure, released in 2012, and Niko: Beyond the Northern Lights, which premiered in 2024. While the film is a holiday adventure, critics have noted that the wolf antagonists may be frightening for younger viewers.
