A lazy farm boy is shrunk by a magical creature and learns to fly
In short: After tormenting animals on his family farm, a disrespectful fourteen-year-old boy is magically reduced to a tiny size by a vengeful tomte. To escape the wrath of his former victims, he joins a flock of wild geese on a transformative migration across the diverse landscapes of Sweden toward northern Lapland.
The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, which aired from January 1980 to March 1981, marked the debut production for Studio Pierrot. This 52-episode anime series adapts the 1906 novel by Selma Lagerlöf, following the journey of Nils Holgersson. While the show remains faithful to the original narrative, it introduces a pet hamster named Carrot and gives the fox Smirre a more prominent role as the primary antagonist.
The story begins when Nils, a lazy boy known for mistreating farm animals, captures a tomte. When he refuses a gold coin offered for the creature's release, the tomte shrinks him as punishment. This transformation grants Nils the ability to communicate with animals, a skill that proves essential as he hitches a ride on a domestic goose named Morten. Morten, eager to join a wild flock, inadvertently carries the tiny boy and his hamster on an epic trek across Sweden's historical provinces.
Throughout the migration, the flock is led by the wise matriarch Akka, who serves as a mentor to Nils. As the group faces various challenges, including Smirre's persistent pursuit and the rescue of an eagle named Gorgo, Nils undergoes a profound personal evolution. He learns the value of compassion and selflessness, realizing that proving his character is the only way to convince the tomte to restore him to his normal size. The series concludes with the group reaching the sun-drenched landscapes of Lapland, where Nils has finally shed his former selfishness.
