In short: Before settling on a familiar revenge plot, screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen envisioned a wildly different third installment: a Wuxia-inspired prequel featuring Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi in 16th-century China. Producers rejected the ambitious concept, demanding a safer, formulaic sequel that ultimately left critics and even the director disappointed.

The production of the 1989 film was marked by creative friction. Kamen, who wrote the previous entries, initially resisted returning to the franchise unless he could explore a new direction. His original pitch involved a dream-like sequence transporting the leads to ancient China, a narrative shift that would have leaned into Hong Kong-style martial arts cinema. However, Columbia Pictures insisted on a structure mirroring the original 1984 film, leading Kamen to return only after receiving a substantial pay increase.

The resulting movie faced significant logistical and creative hurdles. Martin Kove, who played John Kreese, had scheduling conflicts with the series Hard Time on Planet Earth, necessitating the creation of Terry Silver, a toxic-chemical magnate and Vietnam War veteran. Despite playing a character roughly 20 years older than Daniel, actor Thomas Ian Griffith was actually four months younger than Ralph Macchio. Additionally, the age gap between the 27-year-old Macchio and his 16-year-old co-star, Robyn Lively, forced producers to rewrite their romantic subplot into a platonic friendship.

Critical reception was overwhelmingly poor. The film holds an 18% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers frequently citing its cynical, cartoonish tone and lack of character growth. Even director John G. Avildsen later described the project as a 'horrible imitation' that lacked the heart of the original. Despite earning $38.9 million against a $12.5 million budget, it was considered a sharp decline from its predecessors, eventually earning five Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture and Worst Director.
