In short: The 1992 film The Lawnmower Man is famous for its early CGI, but it is equally notorious for a landmark legal battle. Stephen King successfully sued to remove his name from the project, arguing the film bore no resemblance to his short story, leading to a rare victory for authorial rights.

The Lawnmower Man began as an attempt to adapt Stephen King’s 1975 short story about a satyr-worshipping landscaper. However, filmmakers struggled to expand the brief narrative into a feature. They eventually abandoned the original plot—save for one scene involving a lawnmower—and pivoted to an unrelated script titled CyberGod. This new film followed a scientist, Dr. Lawrence Angelo, who uses virtual reality and drugs to enhance the intelligence of a gardener named Jobe Smith, leading to disastrous, superhuman consequences.

King was so dissatisfied with the final product that he sued in May 1992 to have his name stripped from the title. In July 1992, a federal judge ruled in his favor, marking a historic moment for creative control. Despite the ruling, the studio continued to market the film using King's name, leading to further litigation. By 1994, the studio was held in contempt of court and eventually paid King $2.5 million in a settlement. The case remains a significant precedent for authors seeking to protect their brand from unauthorized adaptations.

Beyond the courtroom, the film was a technical experiment. It utilized early motion capture and a unique process called the Gemini technique to transfer CGI onto film. While critics at the time were divided—praising the visual integration but panning the script—the film achieved commercial success, grossing $150 million worldwide. It remains a strange artifact of early 1990s digital ambition, standing as a cautionary tale about the friction between corporate intellectual property and the original creators of the source material.
