In short: The 2003 adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a financial success, but it proved to be a creative disaster. Plagued by on-set conflicts and a chaotic production, the film became so frustrating for its star, Sean Connery, that he decided to walk away from Hollywood for good.

The film, directed by Stephen Norrington, was intended to be a high-concept steampunk adventure featuring literary icons like Allan Quatermain and Captain Nemo. Despite a $78 million budget and a star-studded cast, the production was marred by significant friction. Connery, who accepted the role of Quatermain for $17 million after famously turning down parts in The Matrix and The Lord of the Rings, found the experience to be a nightmare. He reportedly clashed frequently with Norrington, eventually suggesting that anyone looking for the director should check the local asylum.

The project faced numerous hurdles, including a failed special effects set that forced a last-minute scramble for a new vendor and intense studio pressure to secure a summer release. To broaden the film's appeal to American audiences, the studio insisted on adding the character of Tom Sawyer, a decision producer Don Murphy initially dismissed as a stupid note before later calling it brilliant. The final product was savaged by critics, holding a 16% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with reviewers citing inexplicable motivations and a lack of character depth.

Beyond the critical failure, the film was entangled in legal trouble. Writers Larry Cohen and Martin Poll sued 20th Century Fox, alleging the studio plagiarized their script, Cast of Characters, to create the film. While Fox settled out of court, the controversy added to the project's troubled legacy. For comic book creators Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill, the adaptation was a disappointment that strayed too far from the source material. Ultimately, the experience soured Connery on the industry, leading him to retire from live-action films in 2006, citing his exhaustion with dealing with what he called idiots in showbiz.
