How a train journey and a missed connection defined a 2007 cult classic
In short: When a depressed businessman meets a talkative stranger on a train, their chance encounter spirals into a transformative journey. Jab We Met, the 2007 romantic comedy, became a cultural touchstone by blending simple storytelling with genuine performances, ultimately earning cult status and proving that sometimes the best plans are no plans at all.
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Jab We Met follows the story of Aditya Kashyap, a wealthy businessman struggling with depression after a personal heartbreak. While wandering aimlessly, he boards a train where he meets Geet Dhillon, a vibrant and talkative woman. Their journey begins in earnest when they miss their train, leaving them stranded and forced to travel together toward Geet’s home in Bhatinda. This unexpected road trip serves as the catalyst for their mutual growth, with Geet’s infectious energy helping Aditya rediscover his own confidence and purpose.
The casting process for the film was unconventional. Ali originally considered Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol for the lead roles, but eventually settled on the real-life couple Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor. Ali noted that he sought a natural, unpretentious performance from his leads, specifically praising Shahid for bringing a hidden maturity to the role of the quiet, grieving Aditya. The production was filmed across diverse locations, including Chandigarh, Shimla, and Manali, with the crew even capturing scenes at the high-altitude Rohtang Pass.
Upon its release in October 2007, the film was a significant commercial success, grossing over ₹50.9 crore and earning hit status at the box office. Its soundtrack, composed by Pritam with lyrics by Irshad Kamil, became a massive hit in its own right, staying at the top of the charts for over nine weeks. Despite the lead actors ending their relationship during the final stages of filming, the movie’s resonance with audiences only grew over time. It eventually secured a place in cinema history, winning accolades like the Filmfare Award for Best Actress and Best Dialogue, and remains a beloved example of Indian romantic comedy.
