In short: In the 2020 film The Midnight Sky, an aging scientist isolated in a radiation-scarred Arctic base races to warn a returning spacecraft of Earth’s collapse. Directed by and starring George Clooney, this visually ambitious drama explores themes of regret, connection, and the desperate search for a new beginning among the stars.

Set in 2049, the narrative follows Augustine Lofthouse, a reclusive academic suffering from a terminal illness that requires constant hemodialysis. After a global catastrophe renders Earth’s surface uninhabitable, Lofthouse remains at his Arctic station to intercept the Aether, a crewed mission returning from Jupiter’s moon, K-23. His mission is to prevent the crew from landing on a dead planet, urging them instead to return to the habitable moon he discovered years earlier.

The production of the film was as challenging as its setting. Filming took place in Iceland, where the crew endured 50 mph winds and temperatures as low as -40 °F. To capture the vastness of space and the isolation of the Arctic, the production utilized Arri Alexa 65 cameras and StageCraft virtual production technology—the same LED panel system used for The Mandalorian. George Clooney, who lost 25 pounds for the role, navigated a complex shoot that required rewriting the character of Sully to accommodate Felicity Jones’s real-life pregnancy.

Critical reception was mixed, with the film holding a 49% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 58 out of 100 on Metacritic. While some reviewers praised its emotional tone and ambition, others criticized its pacing and derivative nature. Despite the polarized reviews, the film found a significant audience on Netflix, reaching 72 million households in its first week and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects, ultimately losing to Tenet.
