How the Mikaelson family reclaimed their throne in the heart of New Orleans
In short: The Originals, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, follows the world's first vampires as they return to the French Quarter. Klaus Mikaelson, a powerful hybrid, battles his former protégé for control of the city while protecting his daughter, the first-ever tribrid, from supernatural threats and ancient family vendettas.
The series centers on the Mikaelson siblings—Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah—who were born as witches before becoming the first vampires in history. After fleeing their vengeful father, Mikael, who sought to eradicate their species, they return to New Orleans in 2013 to reclaim the city they once built. They find the French Quarter under the rule of Marcel Gerard, a vampire and former protégé whom Klaus once saved from slavery.
The narrative is driven by the birth of Hope, Klaus's daughter with the werewolf Hayley Marshall. As the first-ever tribrid, possessing the bloodlines of a witch, vampire, and werewolf, Hope becomes a focal point for various factions, including witches who view her as a sacrificial pawn and ancient threats like the Hollow. The family's struggle is complicated by the return of their parents, Esther and Mikael, and the introduction of long-lost siblings like the powerful witch Freya.
Spanning five seasons from 2013 to 2018, the show explores complex themes of loyalty, power, and the weight of legacy. The series serves as a bridge in the broader franchise, eventually leading into the spin-off Legacies, which follows a teenage Hope at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Through its run, the show maintained a high critical reception, with later seasons earning significant praise for their development of the Mikaelson family's intricate, often adversarial, yet deeply bonded dynamics.
